“Bone Garden” is a short story that originally appeared in the anthology “A Fantasy Medley 2” and, along with the anthology, had gone out of print, so I was extremely pleased to see Amanda Downum reprint it. It’s part of her “The Necromancer Chronicles” universe, and since I have read and enjoyed all three books in that series, I felt frustrated at not being able to complete my journey into that world with the omission of this bonus story. Well, now I’ve read it, and I am very happy to have done so.“Bone Garden” is beautifully written, shining in its prose while being dark as an unlit cemetery in its plot, telling a tale of demonic spirits and eerie witches, of possession of people by the supernatural and by their pasts, of secrets and posing, of family and rote rituals, of refugees and regrets. There is a tragic opera full of magic in the background (with its own demon), and a tragedy that slowly plays out with subtle magic in the foreground. This all makes for good theater.
Virtually every character, even those with bit parts, evoked emotional reactions from me, an adroit accomplishment given the shortness of the story, and despite its connection to a larger series, it succeeds exceptionally well as a standalone. It’s an excellent work of immersive fiction that will spirit you away into its little plot in the garden, connecting you to its characters like a bone to its skeleton—a fitting demonstration of Ms. Downum's superb authorial skills.
