This is a fascinating journey into a spiritual realm many of us do not understand. This book proves it must have taken a lifetime of experiences to just scratch the surface.
I am far from being a charismatic. In fact as an agnostic it would have been tempting to argue the author's premises. But he has written a testimony, not a history or memoir or polemic. The author is not trying to persuade, only tell us what his personal experience has been. And so in reading his book I had no need to agree or disagree, but rather to simply accept this for what it is--his personal story of a remarkable spiritual journey, a metamorphosis from a man who was mostly cognitive to one who has found new life and joy in his emotional side, bringing him enrichment and new purpose through a new kind of Spirit-life and fellowship. I found both author and writing to be personal, courageous, honest and humble, and I recommend this book as very much worth your time.
What a lovely book. It mesmerised me and I read it over a couple of days. It is an honest and at times vulnerable telling of a life search after God. The scenes described were evocative, moving from college days to mission work in Europe and Africa, then back to USA. Take 'A sudden longing' with you on holidays this summer, sit back and enjoy.
I received this book as a gift and read it in one day as it was too interesting to put down. I found it very interesting and enjoyed the scenes which clarified to me what led the author to his charismatic experience. Even though there were parts which were quite phylisophical (read over my head) I found the bulk of it easy to understand and very riveting.
I was delighted with Dan's craft and artistry with words. His recollections of boyhood in coastal Maine caused me to have a "sudden longing" for bygone days and places. His witty, "sort of" tongue-in-cheek, description of his pre-charismatic days rang too true "My faith community would allow the odd radical missionary from New Guinea to beat the air with his exhortations for heaven to come down and we might even believe his stories, but don't push it beyond entertainment around us." Dan is a storyteller and a weaver, a wordsmith and a poet.
I recently met Dan, and his writing was surprising! It is quite deep, while he struck me as a simple and quiet soul. I, too, found some of the language and explanations too complex at times, but there is a richness and beauty in the language. His descriptions of growing up in Maine were magical. I loved seeing how he moved so carefully and watchfully through his life's spiritual journey, and captured it in such a thoughtful and unusual manner.
This book left a gentle footprint in soul places for me. With a poet's faith, the author shares his experiences in coming to know the Holy Spirit over six decades that I found humble, honest and encouraging to my own spiritual journey. The writing is infused with worshipful wonder and remarkable in its lack of agenda. The book is indeed meditative as the author states, and, therefore, non-linear. This should be noted as it could be confusing if you're expecting beginning-middle-end moral of the story type flow. Whether you are a person of faith or no faith, this book beckons the soul to look beyond to the possibility of eternal joy.
